- Comments Off on Changes in Australian women’s clothing styles
It is quite evident that the way the women of today dress is different from the way the women before World War II and after dressed. Since the First and Second World War, fashion has changed tremendously through the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s until now. You will say it is for the greater good but somehow, those styles are still classy and most designers incorporate them in their new clothing designs. Furthermore, without them there would be no clothing styles today, they are the pioneers. Clothing styles have the tendency of reflecting certain aspects of life especially social aspects and culture. This has imposed huge changes in women’s clothing styles in Australia from 60s/70s/80s until now.
Factors that led to the changes
Just like music, there are different factors that have led to changes in clothing styles. For instance, during the world II, a selected group of people had access to little amount of fabric hence this meant production of simple clothing styles. Therefore, skirts and dresses made out of viscose and rayon were most popular. Nevertheless, women clothes were made out of anything, for example curtains, bed sheets, among others.
Australian women clothing evolution:
As it was illegal to use more fabric, the great contribution of the 1950s cannot be ignored. A look at Australian women clothing style in the 50s, the dressing reflected a complex mix of glamour and conservation. A-line and pencil skirts, and tailored suits rose to fame.
Changes in women’s clothing style in Australia in the 60s is hugely accredited to the dominance of youth culture and great social alterations as the young tucks matured up and demanded their own fashion as well. These received good reception as fashion designers tried to incorporate the youthful taste in their designs. Little did they know that this would change the perception of clothing styles forever?Colorful and bold designs were produced that saw the rejection of the previous trends as everyone, especially women wanted their clothes to reflect their current social attitudes. The modern clothing style broke as women started wearing flowing maxiskirts, loose fitting clothes, be less conservative as the previous trends, showed the outline of their figures a bit, and colorful. These included the mini-skirts, hemlines, and the hippy clothing style towards late 60s.
The skirts and the miniskirts got great recognition from women. In addition, the rise of dresses as the disco music and dance music accelerated its effects across Australia. The sarongs and saris clothing styles also characterized this decade. The sarong, which is an Indonesia origin and the saris from India, became very popular in Australia.
Thisdecade saw the clothing styles evolve even more. The skirts and dresses once again became longer with more straight line plus a more sophisticated design. The social and economic impact was also a major contributor. More women joined the professional line hence they were forced to adapt to the coat and suit trends. The music stars like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Mariah Carey, among others influenced women highly with their glamorous and flashy looks. Movie stars were not left behind as they contributed highly to the clothing styles in this decade.
The 80s trends spread throughout the 90s as more casual clothing styles started evolving. Music and movies were once again a major contributor in this era. The clothes were less conservative and even provocative to some extent. Nevertheless, loose and flowing maxi skirts were also present. Today, clothing styles in Australia is dynamic.
Coco Chanel, the renowned and famous clothing designer, once said, “Fashion fades only style remains”. To her words, there has been changes in women’s clothing style in Australia from 60s until now. The changes has been due to various factors that are due to social impacts and different attitudes. Nevertheless, the exceptional work done by most designers such as Katie Pye, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, among others is worth mentioning and paying tribute to.
